Ohio Suicide Fatality Review Best Practices Summit
8:30 AM - 5:00 PM EST

Event Description
The Ohio Suicide Prevention Foundation (OSPF), in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services (OhioMHAS), and the Ohio Department of Health, invites you to attend the first ever Ohio Suicide Fatality Review Best Practices Summit! This day-long learning summit will invite suicide fatality review stakeholders from around Ohio (local health departments, mental health boards, coroners, death investigators, pathologists, suicide prevention coalitions, etc.) to learn about best practices from local and national fatality review experts in the field. Ohio communities interested in starting a suicide fatality review (SFR) board AND existing fatality review boards are invited to attend to learn from your peer SFRs around the state and other experts.

In September 2021, Ohio legislation passed that offers guidelines for communities when implementing a suicide fatality review board. Since the passing of this legislation, over 30 Ohio counties are now operating suicide fatality review committees in their communities. However, SFR as a prevention initiative is still fairly new, and many stakeholders across the state have expressed the desire to receive practical advice and technical support when establishing their committees. As many of you know, data and recommendations deriving from suicide fatality reviews can be a novel way to produce robust recommendations and inform prevention initiatives into community-level suicide prevention efforts. As such, SAMHSA and the VA have held multiple Suicide Mortality Review (SMR) Academies, inviting over 20 States and Territories to develop action plans to support suicide fatality review initiatives in their communities. Ohio participated in the inaugural SMR Academy in 2023 and now has the chance to become a leader in this work. This Ohio Suicide Fatality Review Best Practices Summit is one of the direct results of our statewide multisectoral partnership, alongside the help of SAMHSA and VA guidance to support local SFR development in Ohio.
